Business Meeting 9/19/06
Adams Street Recreation Center
Peregrine, Seneschale
21 Thescorreans present

Peregrine opened the meeting by asking for a moment of silence in remembrance of Khalek's father, Father Dick Comegys, who passed away on September 7.

1. Officer Reports

  • Chirurgeon: Nothing to report, Phillipe said.
  • Archery: We've had a number of new people show up for practice on Sundays, Cedric said, so he thought it would be a good idea to put together a pamphlet on basic archery how-tos for them. He passed around a draft copy of the "Naked Archery Manual."
  • A&S: Kadlin commended those who received awards at Pennsic and those who made scrolls for the various courts, and referred to the September social meeting notes for information on the classes gentles attended at Pennsic. She noted that a class on Middle English is being offered at the University of Rochester, praised the new Thescorre Dance & Drum webpage that Carlo designed, and reported that a merchant is selling out all of its clothing patterns.
    • She is talking with Their Excellencies about the format for the A&S competition at Baronial Champs next month, suggested that gentles wishing to enter read the criteria Katja posted to the Thescorre list this week, and said she's thinking of requiring entrants to enter three out of five categories after reviewing the formats of the Drachenwald and Atlantian A&S competitions. [Note: Katja asked her later that night to reduce the requirement to two out of three categories.]
    • October's social meeting topic is how to prepare for the Champs' A&S competition.
  • Youth: We've had two practices since Pennsic, Mairghread reported, and two Thescorre youth fighters entered the kingdom champion tournament at last weekend's Coronation.
  • Chronicler: Mairghread hopes to move the Fewmet to an electronic format, and therefore expects to waive the subscription costs. She asked that everyone please let her know by October 1 if you *don't* have Internet access and still require a paper copy. She thanked Eldjarn for serving as her layout editor and Domesday editor since she became chronicler, and added that since he is now deputy seneschal, he is going to be simply her Domesday editor.
  • Steward: We have stuff all over the barony, Steffan said. Several gentles spoke up to say where certain items were (the Gotts, the list ropes, etc.). If, after the wedding this weekend, you have anything that belongs to the barony, please talk to Steffan about returning it to his keeping.
  • Exchequer: Alina reported that we have $4,683.20 in checking and $1,109.84 in savings, then noted that with the barony's permission from a previous meeting she is transferring $2,000 from checking to savings. She thanked Fridrikr for being her deputy.
    • Fridrikr asked if it was legal for the Barony to make a donation to the Parkinsons Research Center in memoriam of Father Dick. Solveig questioned whether a non-profit could get in trouble for making such a donation; Fridrikr asked Peregrine to talk to kingdom officers about whether it's possible for discussion at a future meeting.
  • MOL: Nothing to report, said Bronwyn.
  • Heavy Weapons: We had almost 12 people at last night's practice, Spyke said, with no injuries or riots to report.
  • Seneschale: I got my first quarterly report in on time! Peregrine said.
  • Baroness: Katja urged everyone to attend Baronial Champs in three weeks, noting that site fee is only $2 and something for the potluck.
    • Katja also informed everyone of an upcoming science fiction/fantasy convention, Astronomicon, which will be at the Clarion Riverside Hotel in Rochester November 10 through 12. With a focus on women in science fiction, the guests include artist Julie Bell, Pamela Sargent, Catherine Asaro, and Bjo Trimble. Since several of us had a wonderful time at a demo at last year's con, do we want to ask the con organizers if we can do it again? There seemed to be support, so she'll give the event flyer to the chatelaine and A&S officers.
  • Cauldron Bleu: We talked at our September guild meeting about cooking and food classes we attended at Pennsic, Bryn said, and shared handouts. She briefly discussed the quince jam she made recently for an event. She added that she hopes to show the movie Vatel soon, since it demonstrates some great cooking techniques while telling the story of a real-life royal head cook. Future guild meetings will be on the history of cookies, breadmaking, and other topics. "Please come to cooks guild. Cooking is fun, not scary or hard, and you too can redact a recipe."
  • Dance & Drum: We're meeting tomorrow night at Dubheasa's house, Carlo announced, and plan to begin working on a drum song. We'll have different parts for different drummers, and the dancers will create a choreography to the song. [Note: To be accurate, Dehka will create a choreography and I'll be grateful and excited to learn it! <smile> - Katja] This way, the drummers won't just do the same rhythm over and over until the dancers fall over.
  • Coffee Report: Tonight's flavor is decaffeinated Vermont Maple Nut Crunch.
  • Threadworkers: We're meeting on September 24 at Peregrine's home, Matilda announced, and she'll host the October meeting. We plan to work on award tokens in various different mediums, since they are always in demand.
  • Scribal: Collette left the meeting early, but we know that the Scriptorium has been quite busy lately.
  • Western Dance: Solveig has kindly offered to teach Japanese dance at an upcoming practice, Peregrine announced.

2. Baronial Champs, October 7

Katrina will be at the Genesee Country Campground in Caledonia on Friday afternoon, October 6 for set-up. She'd very much appreciate anyone who can loan shades (pavilion tops, etc.) bring them then; she'll post the specific times on the Thescorre list soon. She passed around signup sheets for tollner, set-up, and break-down.
Competition Schedule: She is working with the marshals/current champions and Their Excellencies on when each tournament will occur, and also will post that as soon as it is finalized. Overall, all of the martial lists will be open all day, with certain hour-long blocks set aside in each category for that category's championship tournament. For example, the fencing tournament will be from 1 to 2 p.m., with the list open before and after all day for "playing." The youth tournament will definitely be in the morning, per the marshal's request.
If anyone has a question about a specific tournament, please contact the marshal/champ in charge of that tournament: Cedric is running the archery competition, Kadlin the A&S, Daedra & Fridrikr the bardic, Yasmina fencing, Athos both heavy weapons & thrown weapons, and Nivah & Mairghread youth fighting.
Potluck dinner: please email Sue directly or via the Thescorre list to let her know what you plan on bringing. If you don't know what to bring, please contact her and she'll let you know what is needed, "so we don't have 12 desserts and no entrees," Katrina explained. There are plenty of electrical outlets in the pavilion. In addition, we will have access to the owners' refrigerator during the day. Katrina plans to have the food all at the food-prep end of the pavilion and the A&S entries at the other end (near the dias).
Katrina said she didn't know if there was enough barony rope for all the lists, and asked if she could buy additional rope if needed. The cost would be below $25, so a barony vote wasn't necessary, but Peregrine took an informal vote regardless. Most everyone mooed in approval, no one barked in opposition, and two gentles quacked abstentions. (Yes, barnyard voting was in effect…)

3. Microsoft Publisher purchase

At the July social meeting, the barony voted to buy MS Publisher for the chronicler at a special discounted price of $23. Unfortunately, Peregrine reported, she learned when she tried to place the order that it was no longer available at that price. The best price is $72. After some brief discussion, those present approved purchasing the application at the increased price 19-0-3. Peregrine said she would place the order the next day.

4. Webminister office

Following discussion at recent meetings regarding whether the webminister office is a deputy of the chronicler's or the seneschal's office, Peregrine said she reviewed our policies and meeting notes. The office is currently listed in our policies as a deputy of the chronicler, which follows the kingdom model, and makes sense from a reporting standpoint. Peregrine said she found nothing that led her to believe we had it under the seneschal's office, and therefore said she believes that no change is necessary. Spyke suggested that, unless the current webministers are unhappy or feel slighted that they are deputies instead of full officers, we should leave it alone. [Note: The webministers were home sick that night. Feel better soon!]

5. Bids for C3R?

Peregrine reminded everyone that she needs bids for College of Three Ravens in February.

6. Officer terms

Three officer terms are up for renewal in January: knight marshal, chatelaine, and minister/mistress of lists. Peregrine asked anyone who is interested in these offices please see her for an officer bid form. If the current officers want to continue in their offices, they too need to fill out a form.

7. Status of Equestrian officer/practices

Cerridwen has let her membership lapse and is not able to run practices on Sundays anymore. Therefore, Peregrine reported, equestrian practice is no longer merely on hiatus; it is canceled. If anyone wishes to get warranted as an equestrian marshal and run the practice, please do so and let Peregrine know.

8. Policies

If anyone has any proposals to change baronial policies at November's Curia, please contact Peregrine.
