3/21/06 Thescorre Business meeting
Steffan, seneschal
20 Thescorreans present
Adams Street Community Center

1. Officer Reports

    • Webministers: our domain account is expiring in May (due for renewal), Donal said, and he suggested switching to a different web host. We currently have StarLogic, which charges us 214.80 for a two-year agreement. He recommended switching to GoDaddy, which would cost only $135.68 for two years. Donal noted that he uses GoDaddy for one of his personal accounts and he feels they are much faster. Plus, they offer 50 GBs of space versus only 500 MGs at StarLogic. They offer blogs, too! Sorcha added, plus unlimited email forwarding. [Before the meeting, Donal had said that he can access the account before the existing one expires and will be able to upload our webpage/change over all our emails so that there is no downtime.] Grendel commented that he thinks his company, BlueTie, handles the email for GoDaddy's ISP. [He verified afterward that it does not.]
      • Those present voted 16-0-1 to change web hosts.
    • A&S: Kadlin summarized all the tons of arts stuff going on recently.
      • Lots of Thescorreans were inducted into the Sycamore recently (Carlo, Juliana, Cadifor, Ruaidri, and Maighread) and Collette was inducted into the Broche.
      • Scribal meetings are happening regularly, as are Cooks Guild, Threadworkers, and both dance practices.
      • Several folks taught at College of Three Ravens (Boldo, Daedra, Roberta, Collette, Sadira, Katja, Yasmina, and Una).
      • Numerous folks are doing private projects (Caradawc is doing leatherworking and a Turkish coat, Orianna is doing embroidery, Juliana has finished a tablet weaving, et. al.).
      • Finally, Branwyn placed third in the novice category at the Pent at Ice Dragon. Vivant!
    • Chatelaine: We brought the demo box tonight and we need more donations, Sigvaldi announced. Even if something can't be used for the box, it can be auctioned off to raise funds for the box. Several gentles have contributed items (Devon & Daedra, Caradawc, Phillipe, Dubheasa, et. al.). In answer to a question from Juliana, the doll period clothing project is still viable; the chatelaines have just put it on hold while they focus on getting the demo box fully stocked and viable. Siggy picked up a great donation for the box at Ice Dragon, a book called How To Survive In The Middle Ages. (He asked to be reimbursed for the $8 the book cost.) There was a discussion about how different schools allow or don't allow weapons to be included and whether it just needs to be in a scabbard or whether it needs to be a wooden weapon. ("How about a shinai? That’s just hard grass!")  There are several demos planned for the near future:
      • Iroquois Middle School, March 31 and April 7. These are both ADEPT demos, and although he doesn't expect a lot of people to do a demo in the middle of a workday, he'd really appreciate the help if anyone is available. "Don't let ADEPT scare you, it's a lot of fun," Siggy said. Dubheasa added that the students ask highly intelligent (sometimes scary) questions.
      • A local library group may want a mini-event sometime in the summer… more on this in the future.
      • A Hilton demo.
      • A child care center in Pittsford or Penfield would like repeated demos in July, Dubheasa noted, ideally every day for two weeks (but she knows this isn't feasible).
    • Chirurgeon: Phillipe congratulated Mick on becoming a journeyman chirurgeon. He plans on getting chirurgeon t-shirts made, as well as getting some chirurgeon information on the barony website. He noted that they've run out of some minor supplies at recent events (ice packs, Band-Aids) and will be asking for some funds to replace them.
    • Archery: Practice is still on hiatus until mid-April, Cedric said, but that's only a few weeks away. When it's warm, we'll go to RIT.
    • Dance: Speaking for Peregrine, Cedric noted that Western dance is Wednesday night. He did not know if it was naked, but said it was always fun…
    • Baron & Baroness: Speaking as His Excellency, Cedric thanked everyone who worked at Ice Dragon. "It really impresses the heck out of us – every time we turn around, Thescorreans are working at events. Thescorre is taking over everywhere!"
    • Fencing: "There's been fencing, but it hasn't been naked," Yasmina reported. <Katja disagreed, noting that Grendel was half-naked in the hallway the previous night while suiting up. Yasmina said half-naked didn't count.> We have some new fencers and folks who are getting back into it. There is no practice next week because the recreation center is closed Monday. She added that there were several fencing classes at C3R (period sword & dagger, tourney fencing for the non-fencer, a roundtable, etc.) that were well received, and she wants to ensure rapier classes are scheduled for next year's event. Also, one of the ancient and venerable Xerox cardboard boxes, which held the loaner gear, died recently. She replaced it with an old wheelie suitcase she's not using. However, she may ask for funds soon for new loaner gloves, since most of those are pretty holy.
    • Thrown Weapons: Timothy discovered some new target butts on Sunday when he saw a felled tree nicely sliced into rounds and got the property owner's permission to haul them away. (All by himself, mind you, and they were big!) If anyone else sees tree slices, the practice could use more targets. He plans to do an inventory soon of the loaner gear and expects to ask for some funds to get more mid-sized axes and/or knives. (We have enough small- and large-sized ones now.) He noted that our current champion, Athos, practices throwing every day… even in the snow!
    • Chronicler: Speaking for Mairghread, Eldjarn said the Fewmet should be in the mail in the next couple of days. They're still accepting photos for the Domesday.
    • Exchequer: Alina had posted her report to the baronial Yahoo list on Monday:There is $4353.62 in checking and $1108.44 in savings. She has mailed all current refund/reimbursement checks from 3CR, and has also sent in the event report. She still needs a deputy.
    • Youth Marshals: Nivah had also posted her report: there were three practices in March with steady attendance. We attended one event, where we took first place in division 3. The next practice will be on April 3 at the rec center.
    • Steward: Brace yourself…Steffan did NOT say "we have stuff, it lives in my basement"!
        • Instead, Alison announced her intention to hold a baronial stuff clean-up day to clean, repair, and replace things on a Saturday or Sunday in June (when it's warm, so we can hose down and clean everything outside).
        • Why? Because she's pretty sure the baronial stores have not been cleaned and fully inventoried since 1997. Several things are in desperate need of repair or replacement (like the barony road signs). Plus, the inventory list is extremely outdated – it noted that stuff belonged to her and Corwin…
        • The clean-up will take place at Steffan's house, 160 Sewilo Hills Drive. It will be sort of like a picnic, with food and drinks. (There was some discussion of when exactly was the last barony picnic??? Siggy said he hopes to get Scott Hetsko from News 8 to cover our barony picnic for his backyard party segment…) The exact date will be forthcoming.
        • So, Steffan added, if you have anything that belongs in the basement, tell him and get it back to him soon.

2. Procedures & Policies

    • Steffan has printed off several copies of the recently revised document, and handed out copies.

3. Pax Bid

Alison spoke for Orianna, saying she heard several folks are not happy with the bugs and great distances at Junius Ponds, so she is looking into different sites. So, there is no bid yet.

4. Coffee Report

    • Coffee Boy Carlo announced that tonight's coffee is naturally decaffeinated and unadulturatedly something or other. He has coffee that he doesn't drink which he wants to donate to the barony; he will give it to Steffan for the baronial stuff

5. Future Sites?

    • Kadlin said that there's a former SCAdian at her diet weigh-in who said the Armory on Main Street is being revamped, and she will keep an eye on it as a potential event site.
Phillipe has talked to the potentate of the Webster Shriners Lodge, who said they need to have an autocrat ask for a *specific* date for an event, plus Phillipe and the autocrat would have to come talk to the Shriners at one of their meetings before we can get permission for renting the site. "So, we can use it, but we have to jump through some hoops?" Siggy asked. "Once we jump through the hoops and if we behave and everything, future events there will be assured?" Timothy added. Phillipe said he believed so. He noted that Shriners might want to attend the event; Timothy said he wasn't surprised since he autocratted an event at a Masonic temple in Buffalo.

6. College of Three Ravens report

    • Eldjarn noted that he's heard from several folks that everyone had a blast, loved the fighting, loved the classes, and the food was great. We got half again as many people as we did last year (215 this time), and we made a profit of $790.60 ($117 of which is due to the feast being under-budget!). "So, we have funding for all these great projects we've talked about tonight," he said with a smile. He suggested slating some of the money for improving the barony campsite at Pennsic, and he would like to see some go back to the cooks for new equipment.
    • If we do improvements to the encampment, does the barony have a storage facility near Pennsic? Grendel asked. House Fabri has one with some spare room, Eldjarn said, and might be able to offer up some space to the barony
