Megge is the youngest of 5 children in the family of a mid 10th century Gaelic clan chieftain, born on her clans' holdings in the hills near Caernarvon. Her mother died in childbirth with her, and none of her other female relatives are willing to take on another girl-child. This left Megge to fend for herself in a family dominated by men and headed by a father who didn't know how to raise her as a proper girl should be raised, so she's got a somewhat unconventional idea of what she should or should not be able to do. It was as a result of this upbringing that when she was supposedly old enough to know better (around the age of 14) she happened to be out on the cloudy, blustery night of the fall equinox, on a dare to spend the night on a hillside fabled to be an entrance to the Fae kingdoms. Thus it was that she was the first to know of the Viking raid on her family's holdings -- though there was little she could do to warn them, as she was claimed as part of the treasure from that raid. She was taken back to her captors' home village, and a ransom was demanded of her father for her safe return. No answer has yet been forthcoming. In the meantime, she has managed to gain a grudging respect in her captors' eyes, as she bloodied the nose of the warrior who had nabbed her and berated him for being so clumsy as to drop her - twice -- when he finally untied her, rather than cowering in fear. Since the Northern raiders had to do something with her while waiting for the ransom demand to be met, the raider who had captured her was told she was his problem, and to see to her care and feeding. In the intervening years, the two have married and are raising a family, and the other women of the village are patiently teaching her how to be a good viking wife. Now all we have to do is figure out why her husband has started wearing funny clothes and behaving in a most un-Norsemanlike manner. |
