Making The 17th Century Possible: What The Medieval Period Did For Mathematics
Jean d'Honfleur
1 hour
The 17th century was a revolutionary century in mathematics, starting with the analytic geometry of Descartes and finishing with the creation of the calculus by Newton and Leibnitz. But the road to this golden age was built by in-period folks: monks, accountants, gamblers, lawyers and, yes, even academics. In this class, we will explore how this road was built by connecting some important mathematical ideas to their 13th- to 16th-century creators. The goal is to show that the medieval period was not as "dark" as it is often portrayed, at least mathematically speaking.

The project for this beginning knitting class is a simplified version of a Monmouth cap. Monmouth caps were knit by the Monmouth Cappers Guild from the 1400s until the 1700s. The originals were fulled (felted), you will have the opportunity to choose to knit a cap that will be fulled or not. While knitting the cap you will learn to cast on, knit, purl, knit 2 together and make 1 cord.
Students will need to provide their own supplies. This cap is knit with worsted weight wool yarn. Do not buy yarn labeled superwash if you want to full your cap. I recommend Brown Sheep Co. Lambs Pride Worst Yarn although other yarns can be used. If you are allergic to wool I recommend substituting a worsted weight alpaca yarn. A set of wooden double point needles (can be purchased in sets of 5), size US 11 (8mm) for the fulled cap; US size 10 1/2 (6.5mm) for the knit cap. A large eyed yarn needle; row counter (or paper & pencil); needle point protectors.
